Talk and film pitching workshop

Pitches are limited to 15 maximum and, to protect the rights in the material, those who want to pitch their ideas are advised to register a page or so online with The Writers Guild of America and the session is recorded.

From Islandmagee to the Island of Doctor Moreau. The Emmy Award winning Hollywood screenwriter Ron Hutchinson grew up in Mullaghbuoy in Northern Ireland and spent thirty years working in Hollywood as well as writing for the stage internationally.

Ron Hutchinson will tell the story of his journey from Belfast to Brooklyn via Beverly Hills, based on his years writing in Hollywood, especially at Dreamworks, HBO and Sony and then teaching at the American Film Institute.

Apart from Ron’s many great films he talks about the black comedy/nightmare involvement in what is generally regarded as one of the great movie disasters of all time, when he was flown to Australia to do a production re-write on The Island of Doctor Moreau, starring Marlon Brando, Val Kilmer and David Thewlis…an object lesson in how not to spend seventy million dollars which has had at least one documentary made about the train wreck it turned into, deep in the Queensland rain forest. There’s a DVD of John Frankenheimer the director’s cut and it’s a cult movie on the midnight college circuit…it might be instructive for an audience to watch it having in mind what he has to tell about the multiple lunacies involved in making it, when most of those involved in making a movie about monsters turned into monsters themselves.
