Roisín Higgins: A History of Change in 30 Objects
In 2017 Roisín took part in a series of roadshows to which members of the public brought objects that represented Irish history over one hundred years. This public history project, called National Treasures, was broadcast in four programmes on RTÉ the following year. It was a television hit as viewers tuned in to see what had been brought to the roadshows in each province. The series told the stories behind objects ranging from an emigrant’s razor; an ironing board from the 1950s; a memento from a TB sanatorium to a plastic bullet. Roisín will talk about the experience of being part of this hunt for national treasures and what the programme taught us about changing life in Ireland in the twentieth century.
Dr Roisín Higgins is a Reader in twentieth century Irish history at Teesside University.
