Irish History

We have had a range of history courses over the years, and are in the process of organising more. Keep an eye on our socials, this page, or give us an email if you’re interested.

Previous Courses

A History of Medieval Ireland

Our tutor David Burke is a native of Galway and holds a PhD in History from the University of Durham, having previously completed Masters and Undergraduate degrees at NUI Galway. He has taught history in various roles at the University of Durham. This term he led two separate courses at the Tyneside Irish Centre on Thursdays, at 4.30pm and 5.30pm:

An Introduction to Irish History: The Age of Invasion 12th to 17th centuries

A History of Medieval Ireland: Thematic Focus, Texts and Translations

No prior knowledge of Ireland or Irish history at any level is required. The aims of the courses are to explore the history and culture of Ireland from the 5th to the 17th Centuries and to place Ireland in wider European and global contexts.

The courses are designed around materials which can be found for free online such that no textbooks are necessary.
