Raised on Songs and Stories

‘Raised on Songs and Stories’ is the name of our welfare outreach project which brings together older Irish people and their friends. We travel across the North East, up to Northumberland and down to Teesside. We sing songs, play tunes and encourage anyone to get up and perform bringing together old friends and new. Every month ROSS is on the road to a local venue where there is a lunch, live Irish music and entertainment.

We bring together Irish emigrants who settled in the North East region during the 50s, 60s and 70s to celebrate their cultural heritage. Our title comes from the famous Dubliners’ song – ‘The Rare Ould Times’ – and we think it sums up many of our childhood memories.

“We help reduce social isolation by encouraging everyone to stay connected with their cultural heritage and Irish identity”

Tony Corcoran, the director of the Tyneside Irish Cultural Society
