1921 Centenary Lecture. “Rejoicing at the peace” or “hearty cheers for the Irish Republic”: The Anglo-Irish Treaty and Irish nationalists in the North East of England.

The Anglo-Irish Treaty was signed in London on 6 December 1921 bringing to an end the Irish War of Independence. This talk will examine the response from the Irish nationalist community in the North East of England to the signing; a response that echoed the bitter division in Ireland.
